How to Convert Your CV to a Portfolio (and Vice Versa) — Step-by-Step Guide

What You'll Learn

This guide will teach you how to effortlessly convert a standard CV into a visual portfolio website, and conversely, how to distill a large portfolio down into a concise, ATS-friendly CV. You will learn how the mapping process works and how to optimize the converted document.

Step 1: Navigate to the Conversion Tool

Head over to /convert. This tool acts as the bridge between the CV Builder and the Portfolio Builder.

Step 2: Select Source Document

Choose the document you wish to convert. You can either select a document you have already saved in your account, or upload a brand new one directly from this page.

Step 3: Review and Optimize (Optional)

If you are converting from a newly uploaded document, the system will briefly show you an ATS analysis or structure review. You can apply quick fixes here, but it is often faster to proceed with the conversion and edit the final output.

Step 4: Choose Target Template

If you are converting CV → Portfolio, select a portfolio template (e.g., Bold Brutalist). If you are converting Portfolio → CV, select an ATS-friendly CV template (e.g., Executive).

Step 5: Review Converted Document Preview

The engine will now perform the structural mapping.

  • CV to Portfolio Mapping: Your "Work Experience" entries are intelligently converted into Portfolio "Projects". Your Professional Summary becomes your Hero/About section.
  • Portfolio to CV Mapping: Your "Projects" are condensed into "Work Experience" entries. Images and heavy media are stripped out to create a clean, text-based document suitable for ATS parsing.

You will see a side-by-side preview of how the sections translated.

Step 6: Save and Open in Editor

Once you approve the conversion mapping, click "Convert & Edit". You will be taken to the respective builder (CV or Portfolio) with all your newly mapped data populated.

Step 7: Customize the Converted Document

A conversion is rarely 100% perfect out of the gate because the formats serve different purposes.

  • If you converted to a Portfolio: You will need to manually add images, videos, and links to the newly created "Projects" to make them visually appealing.
  • If you converted to a CV: You may need to condense the text. Portfolio descriptions tend to be long paragraphs; you should use the AI Rewrite tool to break these down into punchy, measurable bullet points for your CV.

Step 8: Export or Publish

Once you have refined the content, you can export your new CV as a PDF, or publish your new Portfolio to the web!

Pro Tips

  • Data Preservation: Converting a document creates a copy. Your original CV or Portfolio remains completely untouched in your account.
  • Iterative Refining: The best approach is to maintain a "Master" CV with all your details, and use the conversion tool to spin off targeted portfolios for specific freelance gigs or interviews.
